CONT

A Lancaster crew numbered seven: the pilot, flight engineer, navigator, wireless operator, bomb aimer, mid-upper gunner, and rear gunner. ... The mid-upper gunner and rear-gunner were responsible for the defence of the aircraft. Separated from the rest of the crew, they remained cramped at their machine gun posts for the entire flight. The primary role was not to shoot down enemy aircraft. Rather it was to perform the role of a lookout. When they spotted enemy fighters, they would instruct the pilot to take evasive action. Their .303 calibre guns were no match for the Luftwaffe night fighters.
